About this spot

A high platform at an elevation of 105.8 meters standing near the center of Miyato Island, known as the "Grand View" (Sōkan), considered the finest vista among the Four Great Views of Matsushima. From the observation platform, you can enjoy a sweeping panorama of Matsushima Bay with over 260 large and small islands, and the spectacular view in the clear morning air is exceptional. A hiking trail is maintained to the mountaintop, so even families with small children can reach it in about 30 minutes. In summer, there are many shaded areas, making it an ideal warm-up activity before swimming.

Tips

About 20-30 minutes' walk from the parking area at the base to the mountaintop. It's recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes. The observation platform has benches, so you can take your time climbing with rest stops.

Best time to visit

Takes about 1 hour. The morning when the air is clear is the best time for viewing.
