Next stop: Cool Rest Inside While Experiencing Jomon-Era Life Before Your SwimAbout this spot
A scenic area on the east side of Matsushima Bay, on the seaward side of Miyato Island, featuring a composition of large and small rock formations and inlets, counted as one of Japan's Three Greatest Gorges. The contrast between the rugged rock face and blue sea offers a powerful impression quite different from the calm scenery within Matsushima Bay. From hiking trails and viewing spots, you can admire the rock formations across the sea while enjoying the sea breeze. It's an ideal course to get some exercise before your swim.
Tips
Some areas have rocky footing, so comfortable walking shoes are safer than sandals. After enjoying the scenery, head to the Okumatushima Jomon Village History Museum.
Best time to visit
Takes about 45 minutes. During peak sun hours, there are sections with little shade, so don't forget your hat.
