A rare zoo in Japan dedicated to 'habitat-based exhibits' that recreate animals' natural environments, located in Tokiwa Park beside Tokiwa Lake. Continuing a long tradition of primate care, monkeys are the stars of the zoo. In the Asian Forest section, White-handed Gibbons swing through ropes and branches overhead where you can watch them up close. In the Central and South American wetland area, Spider Monkeys bound along branches while Capybaras lounge by the water. Ringtailed Lemurs and Asian Small-clawed Otters round out the kid-favorite lineup. Rather than viewing caged animals, you experience the sensation of encountering animals in their forest habitat—the perfect centerpiece for a family day.
Tips
Tokiwa Park has multiple parking lots; parking near the zoo entrance is convenient (paid). Animals are most active right after opening—ideal timing. The pathways are paved and stroller-friendly, but don't forget hats and water on hot summer days.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Early morning right after opening is when animals are most active and gibbon aerial moves are easiest to spot.
