About this spot

A park on an elevated area overlooking Sakata Port and the Sea of Japan, retaining vivid traces of Sakata, a port town that prospered through North Front Ship trade. Throughout the park are scattered reminders of this maritime heritage: Japan's oldest-class white wooden hexagonal lighthouse, a pond with a 1:2-scale reconstruction of a sengoku-sen (thousand-koku ship), and direction stones used by sailors to confirm their bearings. A walking course is also maintained that connects to poetry monuments and literary sites associated with Sakata. Sitting on a bench and leisurely watching ships pass through the port is a pleasant pastime. The location is also renowned as a scenic spot for sunset over the Sea of Japan, but daytime offers its own rewards—the blue sea and sky spread wide, whetting your appetite before your seafood lunch with refreshing vistas.

Tips

Within walking distance of Somarō, about 3 minutes by car. Free parking available. As this is an elevated park with slopes and stairs, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The wind from the sea can be strong on some days, so a light layer is useful. After enjoying the views, head down toward the port to visit Sakata Kaisenichi Market.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes required. Late morning when the air is clear offers beautiful blues of the port and Sea of Japan, making for great photographs
