About this spot

Tomonoura (鞆の浦) prospered from the Edo period as a port where ships waited for favourable tides, and its charm lies in streets that still hold the harbour scenery of that era, including the stone lantern and the tiered stone landing steps known as gangi (雁木). Walk the narrow lanes and you will find old merchant houses and breweries of the medicinal liqueur homeishu (保命酒) dotted about, while harbourside eateries serve set meals and seafood rice bowls made with fresh Seto Inland Sea (瀬戸内海) catch. Lunch with a view of Sensuijima Island (仙酔島) offshore is perfect before the afternoon at the beach.

Tips

The streets are narrow, so a baby carrier moves more easily than a stroller. Popular eateries get busy at lunchtime, so arriving in the first half of the 12:00 hour is recommended. Shops selling homeishu (保命酒) by measure and souvenir stores also line the harbour.
