Next stop: Swim at an Utsumicho beach with shops and a barbecue area, plus a floating obstacle course in seasonAbout this spot
A compact museum displaying materials on the sinking of the steamship Irohamaru (いろは丸), on which Sakamoto Ryoma (坂本龍馬) was aboard, off Tomonoura (鞆の浦). Housed in an atmospheric building converted from an old merchant house in Tomonoura, it lets you see up close the documents conveying the negotiations of the time and items recovered from the wreck. After your visit, savour Seto Inland Sea (瀬戸内海) seafood such as sea bream at an eatery around Tomonoura and fuel up properly for the afternoon at the beach.
Tips
Admission is a few hundred yen. The halls are not especially large, so allow about 30 minutes. For lunch, eateries cluster around Tomonoura, so arriving in the 12:00 hour before the rush is recommended.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour including lunch. Just the right slot for fuelling up before your swim
