Free Museum Where You Can Enter the Actual Submarine Akishio

Known affectionately as the Maritime Self-Defense Force Kure Museum, with the full-scale submarine 'Akishio' measuring 76.2 meters in length as its symbol, displayed outdoors. It is a rare opportunity in Japan to view an actual submarine that once navigated the seas displayed entirely above ground and to tour the interior. Inside the cramped vessel, you can experience the lives of submariners realistically—seeing the crew's berths, the control station, and an actual functional periscope you can look through. The museum also introduces the lesser-known missions of the Maritime Self-Defense Force, such as the history of mine-sweeping operations. The fact that admission is free for such comprehensive content is remarkable, making this a must-visit facility along with the Yamato Museum.
Tips
Located just across the road from the Yamato Museum, a short walk away. The passages inside the submarine are narrow with stairs to climb and descend, so wear comfortable clothing and sneakers. Although admission is free, the exhibits are world-class, so allow ample time to explore.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Midday around lunchtime can get crowded inside the submarine; if you need to wait, viewing the exhibits in the museum first will help things flow smoothly.
