About this spot

An art museum in Izumozaki Town (出雲崎町), a place with deep ties to Ryokan (良寛), known as a Zen monk and poet of the late Edo period. Through his calligraphy, surviving brushwork and related belongings, you can sense his simple, warm character and the world of his works. The galleries have a calm atmosphere and stay cool even during the hottest hours of summer, which is a welcome bonus. Slipping in a short cultural interlude before your swim adds depth to the memories of the trip. Exhibit commentary for children is also provided, so the whole family can enjoy it.

Tips

About 15 minutes by car from Teradomari Chuo Beach (寺泊中央海水浴場). Early in the morning there are few visitors, so you can view the collection at leisure. Some exhibits may not be photographed, so follow the posted signs.

Best time to visit
