About this spot

Just a short walk from the Tenshin Memorial Museum of Art, this small vermilion pavilion stands on rocky cliffs above the sea. Said to have been designed by Okakura Tenshin himself, known as the father of modern Japanese art, and used by him as a place for contemplation, the pavilion is surrounded by dramatic scenery where the rough waves of the Pacific crash close by. It's also popular as a photogenic spot, whether you're peeking inside the pavilion or gazing out at the sea across the rocks. With its open view toward the ocean, it's a moment to get a real sense of the vastness of the sea you'll soon be swimming in.

Tips

You can view it from within the grounds with your museum admission ticket. The walking path near the rocks can get wet and slippery, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended over sandals. On windy days, be careful, as hats can easily blow away.

Best time to visit

About 30 minutes. The soft morning light shows off the sea's colors beautifully.
