Next stop: A hands-on facility where you can get up close with the creatures of Lake HamanaAbout this spot
Just a short walk from Bentenjima Kaihin Park Beach, the vermilion great torii gate — about 18 meters tall and standing on the surface of Lake Hamana — is a beloved photo spot and symbol of Bentenjima. It was built in 1973 by the Maisaka-cho Tourism Association as a tourism symbol tower, and today its striking appearance seems to float on the lake; in the clear morning air, you can also enjoy the sight of the morning sun shining through the torii. At low tide, you can walk right up close to the torii, letting children experience its size up close. It's the perfect spot for a commemorative photo to mark the start of your day at Lake Hamana.
Tips
Within walking distance of Bentenjima Kaihin Park Beach. Mornings tend to be relatively uncrowded, and parking is easier at this time. How close you can get to the torii depends on the tide level, so it's safer to admire it from a distance rather than forcing your way into the water.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes. Around 10am, when the morning light is soft, is recommended
