About this spot

Rising near the center of the Shonaichi Peninsula jutting into the Seto Inland Sea, this 352-meter peak offers a 270-degree panoramic vista of multiple islands including Awashima and Shishijima. The mountain's name comes from legend: when Urashima Taro opened his jeweled box, the smoke became purple clouds that drifted across the sky. Place names throughout the peninsula commemorate this Urashima legend. The mountaintop area is also renowned as a cherry blossom and hydrangea viewing spot, where walking trails let you enjoy seasonal flowers and seascapes together. Standing on the observation deck, you'll feel the Seto Inland Sea's calm majesty with your whole being.

Tips

From the parking lot near the mountaintop, the observation deck is about a 10-minute walk on a well-maintained trail. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. During cherry blossom season, the parking lot may require advance reservations—check official information before heading there. Some sections of the mountain road are narrow, so drive carefully.

Best time to visit

Plan for about 1 hour 30 minutes. In the crisp morning air, the islands' outlines are sharp and clear.
