This shrine is dedicated to the white rabbit deity featured in the 'White Rabbit of Inaba' tale recorded in the Kojiki. Legend tells that when the white rabbit was stripped of its fur by a crocodile shark and wept in pain, Ōkuninushi came to its rescue. Grateful, the white rabbit repaid the kindness by bringing together Ōkuninushi and Yakami-hime—a story that has made this one of Japan's most renowned matchmaking shrines. The approach is lined with charming white rabbit stone statues, and the grounds feature Mikushirai Pond (御身洗池), where the white rabbit is said to have washed itself. The white 'wishing stones' available from the shrine office are placed on or above the torii gate or offered at the rabbit statues as a cherished part of the worship experience. Perched on a hillside overlooking the Hakuto Coast, the shrine offers glimpses of the azure Sea of Japan through the wooded grounds.

Tips

The parking lot at Michi-no-Eki Shinwa no Sato Shiro Usagi (道の駅神話の里 白うさぎ) is shared, allowing you to combine the shrine visit and beach walk on foot. The approach features gently sloping stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Morning visits see fewer worshippers, making for a peaceful experience for two.
