Sagata Cave (佐潟の洞窟)

Flow of the course

About this spot

This sea cave, counted among Akune's Seven Wonders, sits at Sagatabana, a headland jutting out west of the Sagata settlement. The entrance is barely wide enough for one person to pass through, but the inside opens up into a series of branching passages, and locals say no one has ever explored it to the very end. Some say it was once a dwelling carved into the rock, while others claim it connects all the way to Koshikijima Island. Wild crinum lilies bloom naturally in the area and are at their best from mid-July to mid-August. Stopping by before your swim to trace this mysterious legend with the kids makes for an enjoyable time.

Tips

You'll view it from the coastal path, and some footing can be wet and slippery, so wear comfortable walking shoes. How it looks depends on the tide level, and it's easier to make out its full shape closer to low tide.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. Morning sunlight makes the sea's colors especially vivid at this time.
