A roughly 50-minute lakeside stroll around Nakashima Island on a castle-like pleasure cruise boat
About this spot
A roughly 50-minute pleasure cruise departing from the pier at Toyako Hot Spring Town that circles Nakashima Island floating in the center of the lake. The pleasure boat with its medieval castle-like exterior also has an enclosed cabin, making it comfortable for grandparents with concerns about wind or mobility to enjoy the lakeside scenery. Step out onto the deck and seagulls fly alongside the boat as 360-degree views of Usui Mountain, Showa Shinzan, and Yotei Mountain across the lake—landscapes unique to Toyako Lake with its volcanoes and water—appear one after another. Toyako Lake is known as the "northernmost non-freezing lake" as it does not freeze completely even in the depths of winter, and the pleasure cruise operates year-round. During summer, some trips allow disembarking on Nakashima Island, and the view from the middle of the lake creates a special photo unlike those from the observatory or mountain summit.
Tips
The boarding point is in the center of Toyako Hot Spring Town with parking nearby. During summer, boats generally depart at 30-minute intervals and are easy to board without reservations, but check departure times in advance. The deck is exposed to strong winds on the lake, so don't forget your jacket. Island disembarkation options vary by season and departure, so if you wish to explore on the island, check at the ticket window before boarding.
Best time to visit
Approximately 50 minutes for the cruise, or just over 1 hour including wait time. Morning hours offer calm lake surfaces and comfortable boat conditions.
