About this spot

A unique museum of contemporary art designed by architect Arata Isozaki (磯崎新), where the building itself is a work of art. Its three exhibition rooms, themed around the sun, the earth, and the moon, each have different shapes, with even the way light enters and the space expands designed as part of the artwork. Rather than difficult contemporary art, it's a place the whole family can enjoy, feeling more like exploring a building of mysterious shapes. Since you can view the shape of the building from outside as well, even small children who might find the inside hard to appreciate can enjoy it fully. The white architecture that suddenly appears amid Nagi Town's rural scenery is also popular as a photogenic spot.

Tips

About a 10-minute drive from Michi-no-Eki Nagi (道の駅奈義). The museum may have set closing days, so it's a good idea to check before visiting. Please appreciate the exhibits quietly inside. It's about a 15-minute drive from here to the Great Ginkgo Tree of Bodaiji (菩提寺の大イチョウ).

Best time to visit

About 1 hour and 30 minutes. The afternoon light beautifully filters into the exhibits inside.
