About this spot

A nationally designated natural monument, this giant ginkgo tree towers over the grounds of Bodaiji Temple at the foot of Mount Nagi (那岐山). Said to be over 1,000 years old, the thickness of its trunk and the spread of its branches are worth seeing. In summer, its deep green leaves spread out as if covering the sky, and its shade stays surprisingly cool, making it a perfect spot for a break in the quiet mountain air. Long cherished by the local community like a sacred tree, it lets you feel its powerful vitality up close. Also known for turning golden in autumn, it is a representative natural symbol of Nagi Town.

Tips

About a 15-minute drive from the Nagi Museum of Contemporary Art (奈義町現代美術館). There is a bit of a slope up to the temple grounds, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. There are many insects in summer, so insect repellent is a good idea.

Best time to visit

About 30 minutes. The afternoon, with sunlight filtering through the leaves, is recommended.
