About this spot

An open-air history museum where the actual buildings of the former Abashiri Prison have been relocated and restored. Numerous historic structures, including cell blocks and administrative buildings, are preserved across its expansive grounds, offering a chance to learn about the daily lives of former inmates and the history of settlement under harsh natural conditions. With realistic exhibits using mannequins and a layout that lets visitors actually walk through the buildings, it offers plenty to see for both children and adults. It is a valuable cultural facility that conveys the history of Hokkaido's settlement to this day.

Tips

About a 10-minute drive from Abashiri Station (網走駅); bus service is also available. Since you'll be walking a long distance during your visit, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. In summer, you'll spend a lot of time walking outdoors, so don't forget to stay hydrated.
