Starting with the main festival held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, the Sounkyo Onsen Gorge Fire Festival features fireworks launching every night through August 15. For one hour, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., fireworks launch one after another into the night sky over the gorge, surrounded by sheer rock walls, and the way the sound echoes off the rock walls has an intensity unique to the gorge. Looking up at the fireworks from the gateway to Daisetsuzan National Park offers a sense of scale quite different from an urban fireworks display.

Tips

The event may be canceled in case of bad weather, so check in advance whether it will be held that day. The gorge can get chilly at night, so bring something to layer on. Roads in the hot spring town can get crowded after it ends.
