Fireworks illuminating the night sky in the steep gorge, with impressive sound echoes off the cliffs
About this spot
Starting with the main festival on July 25, 2026 (Saturday), the Sounkyo Hot Spring Gorge Flame Festival features fireworks every night through August 15. For one hour from 7 PM to 8 PM, fireworks light up the night sky in the gorge surrounded by steep rock walls, and the sound echoing off the cliffs creates a spectacular effect unique to the gorge. Viewing fireworks at the gateway to Daisetsuzan National Park offers a sense of scale quite different from urban fireworks displays.

Tips
Check ahead as the event may be cancelled in case of bad weather. The gorge can get chilly at night, so bring a light jacket. The hot spring town roads may become crowded after the show ends.
