About this spot

A hot spring facility in the center of Sounkyo Onsen dedicated to day-use bathing without overnight stays. In addition to two large indoor baths, a sauna, and a cold plunge bath, the third floor has an open-air bath where you can soak while viewing the Sounkyo gorge, which changes its expression with the seasons. There's also a lounge and a shop, making it a good place to rest tired legs from walking. During the gorge fire festival, the whole hot spring town bustles with activity, and lights begin to glow as the sun sets. After your bath and dinner, secure a spot with a good view of the fireworks.

Tips

Restaurants in the hot spring town get crowded from evening onward, so an early visit is recommended. Even in midsummer, the gorge can get chilly at night, so bring something to layer on.

Best time to visit

About 2 hours 30 minutes. Around sunset is when the hot spring town's rising steam looks most beautiful.
