The site where Japan's first full-scale gridded capital stood for 16 years beginning in 694. Though no structures remain today, the expansive grassland allows you to feel the grand scale of the ancient palace. Walking or bus from Imai Town is convenient. There's almost no shade, so sun umbrellas, hats, and water are essential in summer. Wear comfortable shoes as the grounds are extensive.
