About this spot

This shrine is dedicated to Izanami-no-Mikoto, the mother deity of the creation of Japan who appears in the Kojiki. While the Oku-no-Miya (inner shrine) stands at the summit of Mt. Hiba, the Shimo-no-Miya (lower shrine) stands at its foot. At the summit of Mt. Hiba is a place said to be the mausoleum of Izanami-no-Mikoto, and the shrine has long been worshipped as a place for conceiving children and safe childbirth. There is also a tradition that touching and praying at the sacred stone with a round hole, called “Tamadaki-ishi,” brings blessings of fertility and safe childbirth. Surrounded by the quiet air of the satoyama countryside, it's a fitting place to pray for family health. It's located in the same Hakuta-cho as the venue of the Mori Summer Festival, making it a good stop before the festival.
