About this spot

This freshwater lake, surrounded by lush forest, sits almost at the center of Miyakejima. The presence of such deep green forest despite being on a volcanic island is a blessing of nature unique to Miyakejima. A walking path is maintained around the lake, letting you stroll leisurely while gazing at the quiet water surface. It is known as such a treasure trove of wild birds that it is also called Bird Island, and its charm is that you can enjoy birdsong even without binoculars.

Tips

Part of the walking path has some ups and downs, so wear comfortable shoes. There are many insects in summer, so take insect repellent measures. You can also learn about the island's nature at the neighboring Akakokko-kan Bird Center.
