This shrine is known for the way lava from the 1983 Miyakejima eruption buried the shrine building, leaving only the top of the torii gate showing. Along with the newly rebuilt shrine building, the old torii gate buried in lava has been preserved as it is, quietly telling of nature's immense power. The sight of it standing amid the black lava field is a striking scene found only on Miyakejima.
Tips
It is within a short walk from the parking lot. Some parts of the lava field have unstable footing, so view it without forcing your way in. There is little shade in summer, so a hat is reassuring.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. The texture of the lava field stands out more during hours of strong sunlight
