About this spot

This power-generation dam towers over a valley surrounded by mountains in the middle reaches of the Tenryu River (天竜川). Looking up at the dam body up close, you'll be overwhelmed by its sheer scale. A fish ladder has been installed nearby, along with facilities where you can observe fish swimming upstream. From the observation area, you can enjoy views of the deep gorge carved by the Tenryu River. It's a spot that stirs the curiosity of the whole family, letting you experience dynamic civil engineering alongside mountain nature at the same time.

Tips

You'll travel here by car from the roadside station Shinshu Hiraya. The area open for viewing is limited, so please follow the signage and view safely. There's little shade in summer, so a hat is reassuring to have.

About 1 hour. The afternoon light makes the surface of the dam reservoir sparkle
