About this spot

Tadegawa Ohashi spans the Maruyama River (円山川), which flows through the Toyooka Basin (豊岡盆地) and empties into the Sea of Japan (日本海). The area around the bridge is also a point where the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has placed a river monitoring camera. The lower reaches of this river and the surrounding rice paddies were registered as a Ramsar Convention (ラムサール条約) wetland in 2012, transforming the site where Japan's last wild Oriental white stork disappeared into a river now advancing efforts to return storks to the wild. On the night of the Yanagi Matsuri, fireworks launch from the dry riverbed of this Maruyama River. Have dinner at the foot of the bridge and watch as a family, at leisure, as the sun sets and the river's surface turns indigo.

Tips

The riverbed gets crowded with people securing spots from evening, so it's best to find a comfortable spot early. Some food stalls accept cash only, so keep some coins on hand.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 45 minutes. The changing colors of the sky from sunset until the fireworks begin are also a highlight
