About this spot

Part of Abashiri Quasi-National Park, this lakeshore was selected as one of Hokkaido's 100 scenic landscapes. Lake Abashiri is a brackish lake where seawater and freshwater mix, with a two-layer structure of freshwater on top and saltwater below. The shore is home to the Memanbetsu wetland plant community, said to be the largest of its kind in Japan, along with a campground and hot springs, and in summer visitors can enjoy canoeing, sailing, and clam digging. After grabbing a bite to eat, return to the lakeshore, spread out a leisure sheet, and secure your viewing spot. Spend a leisurely time watching the sun go down over the lake where the fireworks-on-the-water will soon rise.

Tips

On the day of the fireworks display, restaurants around the venue get crowded, so it's recommended to eat early. The lakeshore can get chilly at night, so don't forget something to layer on. Aim to secure your spot early, before sunset.
