About this spot

This is a Category 3 fishing port in Minatomachi, Samani-cho, serving as the base for the Hidaka Central Fisheries Cooperative. Off the coast of Hidaka, where the warm Tsugaru Current meets the Oyashio Current, is prime fishing ground, landing salmon and Hidaka kelp, as well as the top-grade whelk (ma-tsubu) prized as sashimi and sushi topping. In the evening, the sky turns a deep amber and the silhouettes of moored fishing boats emerge. It's also close to Nishikicho, the fireworks venue, so have an early dinner while walking around the port and build up excitement ahead of the show.

Tips

Restaurants in the area can get crowded from the evening onward, so it's recommended to act early. Nishikicho, the fireworks venue, is within walking or driving distance. Insect repellent spray will help you stay comfortable into the evening.

Best time to visit

About 2 hours 30 minutes. The port scenery around sunset is a highlight.
