About this spot

This cape juts out to the north of downtown Wakkanai and is one of Hokkaido's finest scenic spots overlooking the Sōya Strait (宗谷海峡). A striking white lighthouse stands here, and on clear days you can even see as far as Mount Rishiri-Fuji (利尻富士) and Rebun Island (礼文島). There is also an aquarium right next to the cape, where you can encounter creatures such as seals that live in the northern sea. Strolling along the coast while feeling the sea breeze lets you fully experience the scale of Japan's northernmost sea.

Tips

About a 10-minute drive from Wakkanai Fukukō Market (稚内副港市場). The wind along the coast is often strong, so bringing a jacket is a good idea. Parking is free.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes needed. Distant islands are easier to see while the sun is still high.
