About this spot

This park spreads across a hilltop overlooking downtown Wakkanai, dotted with monuments such as the ‘Gate of Ice and Snow’ (氷雪の門), which conveys the history of war, and an observation tower built to commemorate the town's centennial (開基百年記念塔). From the observation deck, a grand panorama unfolds over Wakkanai's town, its port, and even the Sōya Strait (宗谷海峡), and you can also spot the area around the North Breakwater Dome (北防波堤ドーム) where tonight's fireworks will launch. The park is lush and green with well-maintained walking paths, so you can enjoy a leisurely stroll with your family in the cool evening breeze. At dusk, the sky's colors shift moment by moment, making it a popular spot for photos.

Tips

About a 15-minute drive from Cape Noshappu (ノシャップ岬). There are slopes and stairs up to the observation deck, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Insects may appear in the evening, so bug spray is a good idea.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes needed. At dusk, the town and sea are beautifully dyed in amber light.
