About this spot

This is Takayama's signature townscape, still carrying strong traces of the Edo period. Whitewashed, latticed merchant houses line the streets, along with shops that convey Hida's food culture, such as sake breweries with their cedar-ball signs and long-established miso and soy sauce stores. Beyond enjoying street food and browsing for souvenirs, it's also worth crossing the vermilion Nakabashi Bridge (中橋) over the Miyagawa River to view the townscape from the opposite bank. Take a leisurely family walk down these atmospheric streets that feel like a step back in time.

Tips

About a 5-minute walk from Takayama Jinya. Popular shops can form lines in the afternoon, so check out any that interest you early. Stone-paved streets are easiest to walk in comfortable shoes.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes needed. The whitewashed townscape looks beautiful in the soft afternoon light.
