Mt. Iwafune (岩船山)

Flow of the course

About this spot

Built atop Mt. Iwafune, this historic temple is said to have been founded in the Nara period (770, the first year of the Hoki era). Climbing the long stone-step approach leads you to a quiet hall wrapped in the mountain's greenery. From the steps, you can look out over the countryside surrounding Tochigi City, offering a calm experience quite different from strolling the Kura no Machi. It's a place where you can feel the crisp summer air along with a sense of accomplishment after some light exercise.

Tips

About a 15-minute drive from the Kura no Machi. There are many stone steps, so comfortable walking shoes are a must. Some sections have little shade in summer, so bring something to drink. Families with small children should climb only as far as feels comfortable.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 10 minutes. It's easiest to walk once the afternoon starts to cool down a little
