The center of Tochigi City, which flourished as a river-transport town in the Edo period, still retains numerous black-plastered storehouses and merchant buildings today. Known as the 'Little Edo of Kanto,' this townscape is perfect for a relaxed stroll along with the promenade beside the Uzuma River. There are also sightseeing boats along the river that let you view the townscape from the water, a great way to make travel memories. Long-established Japanese sweets shops and cafés are scattered throughout, so take breaks as you walk.
Tips
About a 20-minute drive from Michi-no-Eki Nishikata. The townscape is flat and easy to walk, making it stroller-friendly. Some streets have little shade in summer, so take breaks along the way.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 10 minutes. Afternoon light makes the river surface and the storehouses' white walls look beautiful
