This is the site of a facility used for rest and lodging by feudal lords and officials traveling during the Edo-period sankin-kotai system of alternate attendance, and it is designated a National Historic Site. Buildings and gardens that retain the atmosphere of the time remain here, conveying the history of Nankan, which flourished as a key point on the highway running through Kyushu. Amid its quiet setting, this is a historic site representative of Nankan Town where you can spend time feeling as though you've stepped back into the Edo period.

Tips

Located in the center of Nankan Town, with parking available. Since the building inside remains as it was at the time, watch your step for uneven flooring as you explore. It's a short drive to the next stop, Michi-no-Eki Nankan (道の駅なんかん).
