Next stop: Enjoy a breathtaking view of Wakasa Bay from the hilltopAbout this spot
This striking rock formation, with its round hole, was carved by the rough waves of Wakasa Bay (若狭湾) eroding the rock over many years. It was named 'Meikyodo' ('Bright Mirror Cave') because the view of the sea through the hole looks as beautiful as a mirror. It's a scenic spot unique to Takahama Town (高浜町), where you can see up close the natural sculptural beauty created by Wakasa Bay's (若狭湾) intricate coastline. It offers a change of pace for a bit of nature observation after swimming at the beach.
Tips
About a 10-minute drive from Wakasa Wada Beach (若狭和田ビーチ). Since viewing is mainly done from an observation spot, wear comfortable walking shoes. Later in the afternoon, the sunlight softens, making it a great time for photos too.
Best time to visit
About 40 minutes. The slightly slanted afternoon light beautifully highlights the shadows on the rock
