About this spot

An old temple said to have been built in the late Kamakura period, known for its beautiful three-story pagoda designated a National Treasure. It is also called the 'Looking-Back Pagoda (見返りの塔)' because of a legend that passing travelers couldn't help but turn around for another look, the pagoda's form was so beautiful. Standing as if blending into the surrounding mountains, the pagoda draws many worshippers and photography enthusiasts throughout the four seasons. Walking through the quiet temple grounds, it's a spot where you can feel the weight of history living on in the mountains of Shinshu (信州).

Tips

About a 20-minute drive from central Ueda (上田市街). There are stone steps within the grounds, so wear comfortable walking shoes. In summer, there is plenty of tree shade, making it relatively comfortable.
