About this spot

This is a large sea cave on Tanegashima's west coast, formed over long years by wave erosion. At low tide, you can walk right into the cave, and you'll be amazed by the dynamic scenery nature has created. The rock face and the changing colors of the sea are also highlights, and it's known as a photogenic spot. Experience Tanegashima's magnificent nature before the festival begins.

Tips

Chikura-no-Iwaya is located in Hirayama, in the neighboring town of Minamitane. Visiting at low tide lets you enjoy the cave more fully. The footing can be slippery, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Check the tide times in advance.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes. The low-tide period offers the most impressive views.
