The townscape of Arita, which flourished as a pottery center since the Edo period, is preserved as a nationally designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The streets feature distinctive Tenbai walls (walls made from kiln waste) and rows of shops with wooden lattice storefronts. Numerous kilns and galleries line these streets, making it perfect for browsing and selecting ceramics. Some kilns offer pottery wheel experiences, where families can learn about ceramics firsthand. Simply walking these streets lets you feel 400 years of history.
