About this spot

This is the riverbed where the Mikuchi Ōide Weir, which dams the Yamakuni River, is located. About 880 years ago, a mother and son named Otsuru and Ichitarō are said to have become human sacrifices to complete this weir; the Tsuruichi Hanagasahoko Festival, a prefectural intangible folk cultural property, is held to console them and pray for a bountiful harvest. As evening approaches, the area starts to fill with local residents waiting for the fireworks to begin. Once you've spread out your leisure sheet and secured a spot, have dinner with light snacks from food stalls or a packed lunch you brought, and wait for the show to start while feeling the cool breeze off the river.

Tips

About 10 minutes by car from Yabakei Bridge. Roads in the area get congested on the day of the fireworks display, so arriving early is recommended. It's a good idea to buy food and drinks during the daytime to be safe.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes needed. The cooler time around sunset is the most comfortable.
