Ruins of Tochio Castle

Flow of the course

About this spot

This medieval mountain castle ruin sits on a mountain overlooking central Tochio, and is said to be the place where Uesugi Kagekatsu, who became the adopted son of Uesugi Kenshin, spent his childhood. Traces of the fortified enclosures that made use of the rugged terrain still remain, and once you climb the mountain path to the ruins of the main keep, a refreshing view opens up over the town of Tochio and the surrounding mountains. In summer the greenery is lush, and the breeze passing between the trees makes for a pleasant walking course. Touring the castle ruins lets you feel the history of the Uesugi family rooted in this land.

Tips

Some sections of the mountain path are unpaved, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. Take thorough precautions against insects and sun in summer. The climb can make even adults work up a sweat, so bring something to drink.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. Morning to noon, before the sun gets strong, is a relatively easy time to walk
