About this spot

A shrine standing in Higashi-Uraga, reached by crossing the harbor on the ferry, which has been worshipped by the port town's people as a counterpart to Nishi-Kanou Shrine. On the grounds remains a well where Katsu Kaishu is said to have undertaken a fasting ritual before crossing the Pacific aboard the Kanrin Maru, making this a valuable spot for encountering the history of the late Edo period. The main hall stands on the hill behind, and climbing up a bit further offers a view looking down over the harbor. Continue your historical stroll while savoring the afterglow of the short ferry crossing.

Tips

About a 5-minute walk from the ferry landing on this side. Admission is free. The path up the hill has many stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes. It's about a 15-minute walk to the next stop, Uraga Park.

About 45 minutes. The soft afternoon light filtering into the grounds adds to the atmosphere
