Pay Respects at the Shrine on the Opposite Shore with a Well Associated with Katsu Kaishu
About this spot
A shrine situated in Higashi-Uraga on the opposite shore reached by ferry, standing as a counterpart to Nishi Kano Shrine and cherished by the port town residents. Within the grounds, a well remains where Katsu Kaishu is said to have fasted before his Pacific crossing aboard the Kanrin Maru—a precious spot where you can touch the history of the late Edo period. The main shrine building is located partway up the back hillside, offering views overlooking the port from the higher vantage point. Continue your historical exploration with the lingering impressions of the ferry boat journey.
