This is the symbol of Akizuki (秋月), the castle town known as "Chikuzen's Little Kyoto." During the Edo period, it was home to the Akizuki Domain, a branch domain of the Fukuoka Clan with a stipend of 50,000 koku. Moss-covered stone walls, moats, and dignified long-houses evoke the domain's past. The eye-catching Black Gate is renowned as the town's premier sight, framed by vibrant autumn foliage. Beyond the gate, a quiet path leads to Suiyoku Shrine (垂裕神社), where the clan's founder is enshrined. Walking through the woodland, you'll feel the calm of the castle town seep into your soul. The stone walls transform with each season—cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in early summer, and crimson leaves in autumn—making this the starting point of an Akizuki walk that offers new discoveries on every visit.

Tips

The castle ruins are surrounded by stone steps and gravel paths, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The Black Gate area becomes very crowded during peak autumn foliage season, and parking lots fill up early, so arriving early is recommended. The standard route is to park in the municipal parking lot and walk along Sugi no Baba to reach the ruins.
