About this spot

This is the site of a castle said to have been built during the Warring States period, located on a hilltop overlooking Katsumoto Port. It's a quiet historic site where part of the stone walls still remain, and its pride is the panoramic view from the summit over the blue waters of the Genkai Sea and the port town of Katsumoto. Taking in a daytime view of Katsumoto Harbor, where the fireworks will launch tonight, from this hilltop helps build anticipation for the evening viewing. With its pleasant sea breeze, it's one of the highlights of exploring the island.

Tips

About a 5-minute drive from Ondake Shrine (男嶽神社). There is a gentle uphill climb to the summit, so wear comfortable walking shoes and bring sun protection. As evening approaches, it's about a 5-minute drive back to the next stop around Katsumoto Port.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. In the slanting light before evening, the blue of the sea appears even more vivid.
