Join the all-night Odori at 8 PM—dance, not watch, until 5 AM

The 2026 Gujo Odori spans 31 nights from the founding festival on July 11 to the closing on September 5. Its pinnacle is the four consecutive all-night sessions (August 13–16) during the Obon period. At 8 PM, as the festival music pavilion begins playing 'Kawasaki,' the streets before the former prefectural government building come alive with dancing circles. Gujo Odori has no spectator seating—locals and visitors alike dance in the same circle, a tradition spanning 400 years. The ten dance styles all feel natural within a few repetitions, and as midnight approaches, the unified rhythm of thousands of geta wooden clogs sends shivers down your spine. Dance until dawn—how far you go is entirely your choice. Change into a yukata and have dinner, then join the circle. Begin by mimicking the hand movements from outside the ring.

Tips

All-night Odori proceeds rain or shine (check ahead for severe weather closures). Vehicle traffic is prohibited around the venue, and parking fills early; use the temporary parking lot outside the town center or shuttle services for peace of mind. Yukata and dance geta can be rented or purchased throughout the castle town. Accommodations offering rest periods book up quickly, so arrange early. Before driving home, ensure you've had enough sleep.

Starts at 8 PM. From 9 PM onward, circles grow larger with more energy; around midnight brings the strongest sense of unity.
