Historic Stroll at the Ruins of the Shichiri-no-Watashi Ferry Where the First Torii Gate of Ise Grand Shrine Stands

The boat landing ruins of the 'Shichiri-no-Watashi' (Seven-Ri Ferry), the only sea route on the Edo-period Tokaido, connecting Miyajuku (Atsuta) and Kuwana-juku. Marking the entrance into Ise Province, the grand torii gate here is called the 'First Torii Gate of Ise Province' and is rebuilt with each of the Ise Grand Shrine's 20-year cycle renewal—a tradition that continues today. As you gaze up at the gate while feeling the breeze from the Ibi River, your imagination will travel back to the era when travelers crossed these waters by boat. Nearby, the Banryu Tower (蟠龍櫓) has been reconstructed at the Unified Water Gate Control Center, and the landscape of river, tower, and gate is uniquely emblematic of the castle town of Kuwana. A quiet historic site perfect for history-loving couples.
Tips
A pleasant 5-minute walk from Rikkaen along the riverside promenade. The site is open to the public at all times and free to visit. The Banryu Tower's second-floor observation room is occasionally open to the public, offering views of the river and torii gate from above. The riverside has little shade, so a hat is recommended on sunny days.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 40 minutes. Morning light illuminates the Ibi River and grand torii gate beautifully.
