Shrine Conveying Kyoto's Onmyōdō and Directional Warding-off Beliefs

About this spot

This shrine is said to have been dedicated as the tutelary deity warding off misfortune to the capital when Heian-kyō was built. It is a valuable shrine transmitting the faith in the Daishōgun (Great General) deity, which governs the auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of directions, and the history of Onmyōdō (Japanese cosmology and divination). A museum on the shrine grounds displays cultural properties such as star mandalas. Located close to Kitano Tenmangu Shrine and nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood, it offers a serene atmosphere. It is a somewhat connoisseur's detour spot where you can experience the depth of Kyoto's spiritual traditions.
