Situated on the banks of the Imari River, this principal shrine of Imari has been cherished by local residents for generations. The romon (tower gate) adorned with intricate carvings is magnificent—be sure to pause and look up at it before passing through. Within the grounds stands Nakashima Shrine, which enshrines Tanaji-ma-mori-no-mikoto, the deity of sweets who is revered by the confectionery industry. According to tradition, this deity brought back mandarin oranges from a distant land, the origin of sweets—a blessing worth seeking for those with a sweet tooth. This is the perfect place to begin your day exploring the pottery village, praying for safe travels and a fortunate encounter with fine ceramics.
Tips
There are stone steps in the grounds, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The shrine is less crowded in the early morning, making it ideal for peaceful prayer. The carvings on the romon are exquisite in detail—take time to admire them before passing through. If you wish to receive a shrine stamp (goshuin), note the office hours.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 45 minutes. Early morning visits are recommended for a quiet prayer experience.
