Next stop: Learn the background of the festival at a museum introducing Awaji Island's history and cultureAbout this spot
These castle ruins were built atop Mt. Mikuma, overlooking the city center of Sumoto. The stone walls that remain today are impressive enough to have earned the site a place among Japan's Top 100 Castles, and from the keep's platform a spectacular view unfolds, stretching across Sumoto's city center, Osaka Bay, and all the way to the Kitan Strait. Known as one of the finest viewpoints on Awaji Island, it's a place where you can truly feel the island's geography in the clear air of early afternoon. From here you can also see the layout of the city center, where the evening's festival venue awaits.
Tips
The summit can be reached by ropeway or by road. Sunlight is strong in summer, so don't forget a hat and something to drink at the observation point. Some areas around the stone walls have uneven footing, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Best time to visit
Takes about 1 hour. Recommended to enjoy the view in the clear morning air.
