Reportedly one of Hokkaido's oldest shrines, this is the symbolic heart of Esashi town. The people of Esashi, who once prospered from herring fishing, have long offered thanks for the sea's bounty and prayed for bountiful catches and the town's prosperity at this shrine. The evening's Gogo Festival is a traditional event in which floats depart from this shrine and process through town. Paying respects at this festival's main site beforehand deepens your understanding of the evening procession.

Tips

Located in central Esashi and accessible on foot. Entry is free. During the festival period, the shrine grounds may get crowded, so visiting during calm daytime hours is recommended.
