About this spot

This street retains the atmosphere of the Edo and Meiji periods when Esashi prospered so much from herring fishing that it was said "Esashi's May surpasses even Edo." Lined along the coast are the mansions and storehouses of wealthy merchants, including the Former Nakamura Residence, designated as an Important Cultural Property, offering glimpses of the former prosperity. This is the course's premier sight where you can feel the history of Esashi's development as a port town.

江差町内一円で営まれる「姥神大神宮渡御祭」は、姥神大神宮を中心に江戸時代から続く北海道でも屈指の歴史を誇る伝統行事です。2026年は8月9日(日)から11日(火)までの3日間にわたって開催され、このコースでは初日である8月9日を主役に据えています。金箔や彫刻で飾られた豪華な山車が祭り囃子とともに町内を巡行し、かつてにしん漁で栄えた港町全体が祭り一色に染まります。昼間に訪れた姥神大神宮やいにしえ街道、江差山車会館で予習した知識をもとに見る夜の巡行は、一段と味わい深いものになるはずです。

Tips

祭り期間中は町内が大変混雑し、車両通行止めになる場合があります。公共交通機関や臨時駐車場の利用が安心です。夜は海からの風で肌寒く感じることもあるので羽織ものを。荒天時の開催可否は公式情報で確認しましょう。

Tips

Within walking distance from Omakami Daijingu Shrine. Viewing the Former Nakamura Residence requires an admission fee. In summer, sun exposure is strong along the coast, so a hat or umbrella is recommended.
