About this spot
A small island in Esashi harbor that is accessible on foot via a breakwater, and one of Esashi's representative scenic spots. Walking paths are developed on the island, allowing you to enjoy open vistas of the Japan Sea while strolling. This island has watched over Esashi's history as a port of call for Kitamaebune trading ships, making the changing colors of the sea as dusk approaches a perfect memory of your journey.

江差町内一円で営まれる「姥神大神宮渡御祭」は、姥神大神宮を中心に江戸時代から続く北海道でも屈指の歴史を誇る伝統行事です。2026年は8月9日(日)から11日(火)までの3日間にわたって開催され、このコースでは初日である8月9日を主役に据えています。金箔や彫刻で飾られた豪華な山車が祭り囃子とともに町内を巡行し、かつてにしん漁で栄えた港町全体が祭り一色に染まります。昼間に訪れた姥神大神宮やいにしえ街道、江差山車会館で予習した知識をもとに見る夜の巡行は、一段と味わい深いものになるはずです。
Tips
祭り期間中は町内が大変混雑し、車両通行止めになる場合があります。公共交通機関や臨時駐車場の利用が安心です。夜は海からの風で肌寒く感じることもあるので羽織ものを。荒天時の開催可否は公式情報で確認しましょう。
Tips
Within walking distance from the Esashi Dashi Museum. The island has uneven terrain, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The coast can be windy, so a light wrap is recommended.
Best time to visit
About 50 minutes. Late afternoon brings refreshing sea breezes.
